A lot of people ask me about a guinea pig's diet. There are 3 main components to a piggy's diet that all must be accounted for properly.
*Hay ... A guinea pig needs a CONSTANT supply of hay. This can be timothy hay or alfalfa hay. Try to avoid oat hay as it is pretty high in sugar content. You can purchase bags of hay from your local pet store, or you can reach out to a local farmer and purchase a bale from them. A standard bale of hay will last 2 piggies several months. I refill their hay every morning and evening to ensure it stays full.
*Veggies ... Guinea pigs typically eat 1 cup of veggies per day per pig. You can feed them a variety of veggies, and even some fruits. For my guinea pigs, they eat green bell peppers on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Each one gets half a bell pepper. On Mondays, they each get a whole, full sized carrot. On Wednesdays, we alternate between broccoli & cauliflower. On Fridays, they get an ear of corn between two of them. And on Saturdays, we rotate between kale & cabbage. On Mondays and Fridays, we also occasionally give them cherry tomatoes or blueberries as a little treat.
*Pellets ... This should be the last and least thing that you are feeding your piggy. Each guinea pig only needs about an 8th of a cup of pellets a day. It is important that you get a pellet mix specifically for guinea pigs, with no extra coloring or added "pieces", as they are solid sugar and can be very harmful to your pig.
